The 2017 Creative Nonfiction Writers’ Conference (Archived Landing Page)

Personal. Public. Published.

In today's publishing climate, personal stories driven by a strong first-person voice are taking on the most important topics of our time. Meaning: your story matters more than ever.

The 2017 Creative Nonfiction Writers' Conference will walk you through everything you need to know about writing and publishing narrative nonfiction today, including:

  • Connecting your personal story to larger trends;
  • Combining research and memory into an engaging narrative;
  • Creating characters who defy stereotypes and come to life on the page;
  • Finding the best publisher for your work;
  • Working effectively with editors; and more.

Plus, writers of all levels will have opportunities to meet one-on-one with literary agents, get concrete advice from publishing professionals, hear what different kinds of editors are looking for, and hone your skills in inspiring small-group sessions. You’ll also meet and mingle with writers from across the country who share your excitement about the writing process.

Friday night culminates with a special keynote conversation: "The State of the American Magazine." Featuring editors from some of the most thoughtful magazines in America, including ESQUIRE, HARPER'S, the NEW YORKER, the NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE, and the PARIS REVIEW, the keynote promises to be a lively and thought-provoking evening.

Admission to the keynote is included in the price of conference registration, but individual tickets are also available.

Whether you're writing your first essay, article, or proposal or have a couple of books under your belt, we have something for you.

2-Day Pass + Keynote Event – $385*
(student rates also available, starting at $125)

Don’t miss out! Previous conferences have led to book deals, article publications, and new editor/writer relationships. Attend both days of the conference + the special Friday night keynote: “The State of the American Magazine.”

>> What some former conference attendees say <<

“I didn't think I had anything to learn from the memoir workshop [but the conference] was just the kick in the rear I needed.” – EDDA FIELDS-BLACK

A corrective for the isolation of writing. Loved the focus on being a writer in the world, not just at my desk. Loved the balance of practical publishing advice to writing techniques. … The community building aspect was excellent.” – JUANITA RAMSEY-JEVNE

Practical, informative, inspirational, and gave me techniques and strategies I can directly apply to my own work.” – DONNA CAMERON
