About Us

The Creative Nonfiction Foundation inspires and supports writers of true stories by providing publishing venues and educational opportunities for a diverse range of creative nonfiction writing and writers; serves as a strong advocate for the genre, helping define the ethics and parameters of the field; and aims to broaden the genre’s impact not only in the publishing world but also in the arts, humanities, and sciences.

The Creative Nonfiction Foundation was incorporated in 1994 and is a private not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

The Creative Nonfiction Foundation is supported by public and private funds contributed by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Juliet Lea Hillman Simonds Foundation, the Vira I. Heinz Endowment, and the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, as well as by other foundations and individual donors.

Lee Gutkind

Lee Gutkind is the author and editor of more than thirty books, including You Can’t Make This Stuff Up: The Complete Guide to Writing Creative Nonfiction–from Memoir to Literary Journalism and Everything in Between, Almost Human: Making Robots Think, The Best Seat in Baseball: But You Have to Stand, Forever Fat: Essays by the Godfather, and the award-winning, Many Sleepless Nights: The World of Organ Transplantation.

Richard Gutkind, Ph.D.

Richard Gutkind, Ph.D., is a professor and director of the graduate program in the education department at Point Park University.

Yona Harvey

Yona Harvey is an American poet and recipient of the Kate Tufts Discovery Award for her first poetry collection, Hemming the Water. Her second poetry collection, You Don’t Have to Go to Mars for Love, is available now from Four Way Books and wherever books are sold.

Charlie Humphrey

Charlie Humphrey was Executive Director of Pittsburgh Filmmakers from 1992 to 2016. Previously, he was editor and publisher of the alternative weekly paper In Pittsburgh as well as a public radio producer and announcer.

Dinty W. Moore

Dinty W. Moore is author of the memoirs Between Panic & Desire and To Hell With It, and the writing guides Crafting the Personal Essay and The Mindful Writer, among other books.

Patricia Park

Patricia Park co-founded Creative Nonfiction and has been involved in the running of virtually every aspect of the magazine over its twenty years—depending on who else was or wasn’t available. She continues to act as general business manager and is a member of both the editorial and foundation boards.

Lea Simonds

Lea Simonds is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Creative Nonfiction.

Neil White

Neil White teaches memoir writing in Oxford, MS, and operates The Nautilus Publishing Company, which publishes books and magazines on healthcare, education and legal subjects. He is the author of a memoir, In the Sanctuary of Outcasts.
