Writing Powerful Sentences: Go Beyond Grammar

Wednesday, June 16th @ 2 PM - 3:15 PM Eastern

You’ve structured your narrative and know your facts–but how do you make your story sing? We’ll go beyond grammar to discover how words and sentence structures deliver comedy, drama, and meaning.

Additional Information

Many writers can see the difference between their own work and that of the writers they admire. Developing and refining your own voice on the page will take your books, essays, and even blog posts and social media to the next level. We’ll examine how to break rules to fulfill your unique narrative style and how mimicking favorite writers improves our own work. We’ll examine when to use a simile and when to use a metaphor, what the heck a modal verb is (and why they muddy up our prose), and get a ruling on when, exactly, we should use an adverb.

This lively program includes short exercises to practice building beautiful sentences, and handouts will help you continue your work after the webinar.

In this webinar, you will:

  • DISCOVER how your true writing voice is “like you’d tell a friend, but better”–and weed out the dreaded “special writer voice.”
  • LEARN four quick tricks you can do NOW to improve your manuscript 25%–no matter how good a writer you already are!
  • UNDERSTAND the difference between high- and low-context communication and when to use each one in dialogue (tip: make the reader “lean forward” to actively assemble information!)

There will be time for a Q & A at the end of the presentation.

This webinar is ideal for anyone.

Testimonials

I enjoyed reading other peoples work and getting feedback about my own work– the handouts/video links and class lessons were also very informative and relevantly paced to the give structural guidelines.
