Additional Information
Despite our ever-shortening attention spans, longform nonfiction is enjoying a time of popularity. But a successful longform piece is almost always more than just a longer-than-usual essay; it’s an immersive experience that rewards the reader’s investment of time and attention.
Writing longform is a juggling act that almost always requires combining a narrative element with an information component with some kind of bigger question. In this program, we’ll discuss what distinguishes a longform piece from shorter nonfiction; consider the kinds of situations and stories that demand longform treatment; and review techniques for weaving information, reflection, and meaning into a suspenseful and engaging narrative.
In this webinar, you will:
- LEARN specific techniques longform essayists use to establish authority and create tension to keep readers engaged;
- CONSIDER how to match a story’s payoff to the time it demands from a reader
- REVIEW specific passages and transitions from successful stories for inspiration
There will be time for a Q & A at the end of the presentation.
This webinar is ideal for any writer submitting a manuscript to True Story magazine (deadline May 15), but also for any writer working in longform for any publication.
All registrants receive a recording.

I enjoyed reading other peoples work and getting feedback about my own work– the handouts/video links and class lessons were also very informative and relevantly paced to the give structural guidelines.
