From Cold Facts to Truths that Sing: Incorporating Research into Creative Nonfiction

Wednesday, May 11, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm Eastern

Level All Levels

Creative nonfiction often demands that writers conduct rigorous research. But all that information we uncover is just straw we have to spin into gold, the kind of good storytelling that keeps readers in thrall.

Additional Information

Learning to artfully incorporate research gives our stories the heart and soul that distinguishes them from textbooks and turns facts into truths that sing. Sometimes it seems like an impossible task.

As writers we have to balance our research with our own reflections and make sure that we maintain an engaging voice even when writing factual passages. In this webinar, we will look at works by Amy Leach, John McPhee, Joshua Wheeler, Kathleen Jamie, and Rebecca Solnit to examine various ways that writers incorporate research. You will explore several techniques for alchemizing your research and have the opportunity to practice turning information into short lyrical passages with a few writing exercises during the webinar. You will leave with greater confidence in your ability to transform your research into good stories.

In this webinar, you will:

  • EXPLORE the works of various writers of creative nonfiction to examine how they alchemize their research. You will look at the different ways that research is cited and acknowledged within the works.
  • LEARN techniques for alchemizing your own research and translating your facts into stories.
  • LEAVE with an exercise for turning information into short lyrical passages.

There will be time for a Q & A at the end of the presentation.

This webinar is ideal for writers

  • who love research but struggle to give it life in their writing,
  • who would like to find more graceful, seamless ways of presenting facts and information,
  • who are hesitant to use their own quirky syntax and style in factual passages, for fear that it will somehow degrade the information or cause them to lose credibility with readers.

I enjoyed reading other peoples work and getting feedback about my own work– the handouts/video links and class lessons were also very informative and relevantly paced to the give structural guidelines.
