Mimi Schwartz’s books include Thoughts from a Queen-Sized Bed and Good Neighbors, Bad Times: Echoes of My Father’s German Village, both from University of Nebraska Press, and Writing True: The Art and Craft of Creative Nonfiction (coauthored with Sondra Perl). Her essays have appeared in Creative Nonfiction, Agni, Tikkun, the Writer’s Chronicle, the Missouri Review, and Fourth Genre, among others, and seven have been Notables in The Best American Essays. She is currently finishing an essay collection, “When History Gets Personal,” which will include this essay. A professor emerita at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, she lives in Princeton, New Jersey.
